According to infamous security consultant Kevin Mitnick; it is much "easier to trick someone into giving a password for a system than to spend the effort to hack into the system".
The primary method of stopping these security breaches is to train staff not to disclose passwords to anyone; regardless of who they claim to be.
As GISG Principal Consultant, Ian Hughes, points out; social engineering (the art of manipulating people into divulging information) can undermine even the most secure hardware and software environment, and that small. medium and large companies should make the effort to educate all employees of the risks.
